Locality Guide
Location
Helensburgh is a historic mining town with unsurpassed rural and suburban living without the pressures of urban living, and surrounded by virgin native bushland. It sits as an oasis between Sydney and Wollongong.
Helensburgh sits high on the Illawarra escarpment and is the main town in the area. Other suburbs on the Illawarra escarpment include Darkes Forest and Stanwell Tops. Otford sits in a valley where the Hacking River runs through to the Royal National Park and into the Port Hacking River. A part of Otford enjoys amazing ocean views. The road winds south along the coast from here to Bald Hill, where people come from all around the world to visit.
Apart from the amazing views, this is where hang gliders enjoy life taking off from this spectacular spot. The Seacliff Bridge can also be seen from this vantage point.
Travelling south along the coast road or Grand Pacific Drive, is where Stanwell Park will impress with cafes, parks and of course the beach, where some of the hang gliders from Bald Hill land. Coalcliff is next along the coast and is where the impressive Seacliff Bridge meanders out over the water. On the other side of the bridge are the smaller communities of Clifton, Scarborough, Wombarra, Coledale, and 23 kilometres from Helensburgh is Austinmer. We are very lucky to live in and help other people find their new home in these incredibly beautiful suburbs.
We live in the most northern suburbs of the Wollongong Council area. The population according to the 2006 census is 8,158 people for those living in the 2508 postcode area and 4,779 people living in Clifton down to Austinmer. Those needing to travel to work daily, commute by rail or car.
The first settlement in Helensburgh was largely a tent town of railway workers engaged in the construction of the railway line. During construction in 1884 coal was discovered and the township was laid out on the tableland above the mine. One theory has the town being named after Helensburgh in Scotland, birthplace of the coal mine manager Charles Harper. The second theory is that the town was named after his daughter Helen.
